Phonecalls

memories of his father are connected because one of the last memories of his father was a phone call.

"There were four more messages from him: one at 9:12, one at 9:31, one at 9:46, and one at 10:04. I listened to them, and listened to them again, and then before I had time to figure out what to do, or even what to think or feel, the phone started ringing.
It was 10:26:47.
I looked at the caller ID and saw that it was him."
--what did the messages say? Why don't we get to see if he answers the call?

-- The messages were saying his thoughts as he was one of the first firefighters up in the top of the building. Oskar's father, most probably is very frightened as he makes frequent calls to the home number, asking about the family to make sure that they think he is alright.

--I think we don't get to see who answers the call because, the author is trying to hint that he may reveal more information about this event in Oskar' life later in the book.

The phone calls and messages that his father left him play a huge role in Oskar's life since he greatly cared about his Dad.
"I went to the phone to check the messages, and listened to them one after another." (p.68)

After everything that has happened with Oskar and his father, oskar has become scared when the phone rings. "Whenever it would ring, I'd scream,'The phone's ringing!' because I didn't want to touch it . I didn't even want to be in the same room with it." (288)

The phone calls/messages are the most of important line of communication for the author in this book. They are the only piece of his father that he has left.

The phone calls from 911 are so scary, but powerful at the same time. I think Oskar is able to understand the emotions more than a normal person would, and that is what scares him the most. So now he knows that he never wants to feel the pain, hurt, and despiration of the people who were left in the tower.
Oskar's mom doesn't know about the last phonecalls from Oskar's father and her husband.
